But Now
You Are Not Who You Were
Scripture
Isaiah 43:1
“But now, thus says the Lord, He who created you, He who formed you: Fear not, for I have redeemed you; I have called you by name, you are Mine.”
Reflection
The words “but now” signal a shift.
They mark the moment when the story changes direction.
When Isaiah spoke these words, Israel was carrying the weight of exile, failure, and fear. But God did not begin by correcting their behavior or addressing their circumstances.
He began with identity.
“I created you.”
“I formed you.”
“I redeemed you.”
“I called you by name.”
“You are Mine.”
Before transformation comes belonging.
Many people spend years organizing their lives around survival seasons. Old labels, past failures, painful experiences, and voices spoken long ago begin to shape how we see ourselves.
But the truth of Isaiah 43:1 interrupts that narrative.
Your past may have shaped you, but it does not get to lead you.
Identity is not rooted in trauma, mistakes, or the opinions of others. Identity begins with the One who created you and calls you by name.
When identity is secure, fear loses its authority.
Reflection Questions
What labels from the past am I still carrying?
What voices have shaped how I see myself?
What would shift if I began defining myself by what God says instead?
Weekly Practice
Take five minutes each day this week and speak Isaiah 43:1 out loud.
Replace old labels with the truth of the verse:
I am created.
I am redeemed.
I am known by name.
I belong to God.
Prayer
God, help me release the voices that shaped my past and realign with the identity You have given me. Remind me that I am created, redeemed, and known by name. Teach me to move forward from belonging instead of fear. Amen.
